Is that really yours to sell?

You can't sell beer kegs, promotional fridges, subscription TV receivers or hire purchases on Trade Me.

By Trust and Safety 4 December 2024

You can only sell things that belong to you, that you have in your possession, and that you’re legally allowed to sell.

Hire purchase

You can’t sell items you bought on hire purchase, if you’re still paying for them.

These kinds of purchases mean that the company owns the item until you pay it off. If you don't pay, the company can take the item back.

Promotional Appliances

Did you used to own a dairy? Maybe you moved into a house with an old satellite receiver or a couple of beer kegs?

If so, contact the company that made the equipment to figure out how to return it. You can usually find their phone number on the equipment. This is important for items including:

  • decoders
  • remote controls
  • receivers
  • beer kegs
  • freezers
  • fridges.

We work with brands like SKY TV, DB Breweries, Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Tip Top and Streets. If we find one of their items for sale on Trade Me, we'll tell you what to do to get it back to them.

These items belong to the company, and they should be returned to them, not sold on Trade Me. If we contact you about your listing, it means the company wants their equipment back, and we’ll give you their details to arrange a return.
